Shins and Grins
“...And when the boys come flocking to you, just kick them in the shins!” jokes Dr. Lyles at the end of almost every appointment. The friendly atmosphere at his office definitely appealed to me when I chose Dr. Lyles as my orthodontist. More importantly, however, I knew that while Dr. Lyles and his staff valued light-hearted fun, they formed a devoted team that would successfully help me achieve a healthy and beautiful smile.
After my dentist found one of my adult teeth growing behind a baby incisor, I knew I was in trouble. Sure enough, within a year my new teeth began to imitate the squares of a checkerboard. I often heard comments like “You’d be really pretty, if only your teeth were straight.” Soon, I would only smile in pictures with my mouth closed, my crooked teeth hiding with shame behind my lips.
A beautiful smile is crucial for self-confidence as well as oral health. As a young adolescent, my appearance was important to me, and I was slightly embarrassed by my less-than-perfect teeth. I also learned that an improper bite provides a greater chance for tooth decay, gum problems, and bone loss, all of which I wish to avoid.
It was then that I knew I had to straighten my teeth. I had a wonderful smile in me somewhere, and I trusted that Dr. Lyles would make it come out. After waiting for my lingering baby teeth to fall out and several extractions, I left the office with braces on June 13, 2005. It was a proud moment in my life when the last wires were slipped in and I glanced at my new face in the mirror.
My teeth shifted surprisingly quickly, and I noticed improvements within a week. My self-confidence has grown as I have begun to smile more often and even received the occasional compliment. I finally grinned at the school camera this year, braces, teeth and all. And I know a couple of guys that had better start guarding their shins.

A “Hollywood Smile”
I initially began this orthodontic journey because my bottom teeth were so crammed together that it was becoming increasingly difficult to keep plaque at bay. I had gotten to the point where the dentist needed to numb me up and go in to do a deep cleaning. It was a most undesirable experience and I was not interested in this being the norm for me.
Thus, I believe a healthy bite is important because for me it is equivalent to healthy gums! I am actually looking forward to flossing because it will be so easy for me now! I also enjoy knowing that I am preventing any further issues with TMJ.
I have a deep respect and admiration for the kids and (especially) for adults who have endured braces. For kids, it must be an uncertain and scary procedure. For adults, the process can go on and on because it takes so long for those well-established teeth to move! I will feel a great sense of pride and accomplishment for having hung in there while this miraculous procedure took place. Truly, it amazes me how orthodontics works and the end result that occurs. In spite of days with sore gums and mild discomfort with lots of ibuprofen, I am glad that I took the journey. I look forward to having big open smiles in pictures and looking simply fabulous!
While it is true that Dr. Lyles is a crazy ol’coot, he is also a very kind man who empathizes with what his patients are experiencing. I always feel that he cares about me and is willing to take the time to work with me on my appointments. I have never felt that I was inconveniencing him or his staff in any way and that has made my experience with Smiles by Lyles Orthodontics very pleasant indeed.

Okay, so why is a nice-looking smile important? Several reasons. First, it is a major babe magnet (or so I am told) and everybody knows that teenage boys like girls. Second of all, my dentist told me that crooked teeth, even with regular brushing, can lead to some major periodontal (did I spell that right?) diseases, gingivitis, and horridly bad breath. So not only does a healthy and straight smile look good, feel good, and do all around good things, it also keeps your mouth in top condition. What the Smiles by Lyles team has done for me can not be summed up in words.
Dr. Lyles and his crew have tortured me just a bit, but I do give them a hard time, too. Sorry about that. Dr. Lyles has cone wonders with my teeth, two of which have grown in completely sideways, and fixed an enormous overbite that made me look like a pug-nosed puppy. On the improved bite subject, major over or under bites can have an extreme effect on whether or not you are subject to Temporomandibular Disorder which causes pain and suffering for those afflicted by it. And you can just eat better, trust me I would know after having a Herbst in for several months.
The Smiles by Lyles orthodontic team has actually made me feel better about myself, and somewhat raised my self-esteem. So thank you Dr. Lyles, and I am most definitely sure that I will appreciate what you and my parents have done for me until the day that I die.
